As well as recording the exercises and research points as specified in the course, I will also post about any other activities I take part in that broadens my knowledge and experience of music, such as concert visits, books and journals I read, films I watch and topics I research.

Listening To Saxophonists

I have listened to a selection of songs by Michael Becker, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and Miles Davies. This type of music is new to me, and these four musicians gave me a brief but useful introduction to this style of music and the role of the saxophone within it.

Listening to the selection of songs, I found the saxophone has a very unique timbre. It also appears very versatile, in that it can play slower relaxed songs, and frantic-fast paced solos. It also featured some extremely high notes, which I was surprised by, and often has much ornamentation of the melody. This style of Jazz employs the saxophone in frequent solos, which are improvisational in nature. I would certainly be interested in exploring some classical music that utilizes the saxophone, to see how it fits in with the wider orchestral picture.
