As well as recording the exercises and research points as specified in the course, I will also post about any other activities I take part in that broadens my knowledge and experience of music, such as concert visits, books and journals I read, films I watch and topics I research.

Research On Britten's Opera Complete

I have now finished reading Henry James' novella 'The Turn of the Screw', and watched the complete staged opera (found on YouTube here: Part 1 Part 2). Although the opera is English language, it was still at times hard to follow the words due to the opera singing style. As the video didn't have subtitles I found the complete text of the libretto online, and followed this while watching this opera. The libretto coupled with my knowledge of the story garnered from the novella allowed me to concentrate on the music for the most part, and to listen for Britten's variations and overall style and technique in this work.

Now I have completed this exercise I will post it next, followed by all the other exercises I have been working on while researching this opera.
