As well as recording the exercises and research points as specified in the course, I will also post about any other activities I take part in that broadens my knowledge and experience of music, such as concert visits, books and journals I read, films I watch and topics I research.

Contemporary Classical Live Performances

Yesterday I spent some time researching venues which offer performances of contemporary classical music. My usual concert hall is Birmingham's Symphony Hall. Appearing there this year is Ludovico Einaudi. I've previously seen Einaudi perform, when promoting his work 'Divenire' and would like the opportunity to go again. The nearby Birmingham Town Hall is offering a performance of Steve Reich's music, at which Reich himself will be performing. This would be an exceptional opportunity for me, and one I'd like to take advantage of, cost and availability permitting.

I have also sought out other relatively local venues, many of which I didn't know existed. I found Warwick Arts Centre, and on perusing their website discovered a concert being held in February, focused on a range of 20th century and contemporary composers - Bernstein, Penderecki, Glass and Mahler. I find this event appealing as the group of composers featured cover the entire 20th century, and into the 21st, to the present day. This period of music is particularly relevant to my current stage of the course.
