Yesterday I received my tutor report in response to my assignment for part one of the course. While continuing to work on the next project, I'll write my reflections on the feedback here.
Critical commentary on music in the film 'Psycho'
My tutor enjoyed my work for this exercise, and thought I had convincingly put across my thoughts on how the music is used in this film to evoke emotion, and how it can do this on its own even before there has been any action on screen. The 'murder' theme for example can summon a feeling of danger, dread and suspense before a killing has actually taken place.
A short biography of Steve Reich
It was noted here that my notes reflective well the interest I have found in the work of this composer. This is true, as my aim was to keep very open minded when dealing with modern and contemporary repertoire such as this, and in doing so found works that I enjoy, and new concepts that I find very interesting.
Reflection on Part One
My tutor was pleased that I enjoyed my musical excursions so far into contemporary musical styles, and learning more about the philosophies and techniques implemented with such works. He also offered a different viewpoint in regards to emotion in music, specially with Varèse’s Ionisation, which gives me food for thought.
What I can do for future assignments
The points made in my feedback suggest that I need to expand on my comments and explain further in certain situations. One example would be:
"In describing Reich’s
operas The Cave and Three Tales, explain what you mean by
him “taking a more traditional approach”. Is this in terms of construction,
techniques used, instruments used?"
This, in hindsight, seems very obvious to me now. I need to take care when making a statement that I back up my assertion with reasoning. This is something I think I will improve on now that I'm aware of it, and also through more experience writing academic essays.
